Abstract

This case uses the Iphigenia myth to analyze the psychological process that Agamemnon, her father, goes through. Artemisia, a goddess, tells him that in order to allow him to cross the sea she demanded the blood of a virgin girl who was a descendant of the disloyal Helen. Iphigenia was a direct descendant of her aunt Helen. The dilemmas which Agamemnon went through are explained in the text. If he sacrificed Iphigenia, the troops would reach Troy and everyone would be grateful, especially his brother Menelaus, Helen''s husband. If he did not scarify her, she would be able to marry Achilles, her betrothed and would be happy, but would cause Artemisa''s ire and would have all of Greece against him. What should he do?
