Abstract

The human resource department (HRD) of MicroXelence Solutions Pty Ltd, a knowledge-based company of Sydney (Australia), identified the need for a few junior software engineers. After a series of screening tests, four candidates were shortlisted for the final interview. The best suited candidates were offered the jobs at the end of the final interview. After learning about the work environment, especially the ban on the use of Social Networking Sites (SNS), at MicroXelence, the candidates expressed fears that they may not be able to adjust to the existing environment limiting their day-to-day life and decided not to join the company. The case highlights the dilemmas of both - the candidates and the company's human resources managers and facilitates discussion about the need of striking a balance between employees' expectation and company policies.
