Abstract

Google Inc, the world's largest search engine, founded by Larry Page and Sergey Brin, in the year 1998, provided search services to its users for free. It generated its revenue through its targeted on-line advertising programme. In 2008, Google was worth USD157.56 billion and enjoyed a market share of 65% in the global search engine industry. However, in 2008, a group of former employees of Google launched a rival search engine called 'Cuil'. The new search engine promised to deliver to its users search results that would be more relevant and comprehensive than the results given by the Google search engine. Not only that, the new search engine also promised its users complete user privacy unlike any search engine before it. Some analysts were certain that Cuil would be unable to upstage Google in the future, while others felt that the new search engine had a lot of potential owing to the pedigree of its founders and thereby would prove to be a huge threat to Google. Therefore, it remained to be seen whether Cuil would remain another over-ambitious start-up company or whether it would be able to dislodge Google's position in the search engine market.
