Abstract

MindTree, a global IT and R&D (research and development) services company, with development centres in India and the US is growing at a rapid pace, both organically and inorganically. The company has stated its intention of becoming a billion dollar company without providing a time frame, and it is likely to be achieved through an aggressive acquisition-led growth strategy. It is reflected by their acquisition of Aztecsoft on 2 May 2008 and this move is of historic significance as it represents one of the largest consolidation moves in the Indian IT industry of two publicly traded companies. Aztecsoft a prominent player in the outsourced product and independent testing spaces, which has over 2,200 employees and caters to the North American, European, Indian and Australian markets with four delivery centres in India, will lend the much required scale to MindTree. The synergies between the two companies are expected to strengthen the competitive position of MindTree by offering a larger portfolio of services targeted at a wider array of customers. Moreover, the acquisition will give an additional thrust to MindTree's ambition of becoming a billion dollar company. The case helps to understand the business dynamics of the Indian IT services sector and provides room for discussion on the rationale behind MindTree's acquisition of AztecSoft and the possible synergies between the two companies.
