Abstract

This is the second of a two-case series (610-012-1 and 610-013-1). The main case describes the design, implementation and operational implementation of a focused clinic in the Middle East. The ICLDC provides team-based care for managing diabetes with clear processes that have benefitted from lean Six Sigma tools. A supplement describes how the ICLDC fits into the broader context of the rapidly changing health system in the United Arab Emirates. For operations strategy, the case demonstrates a focused solution provider that is neither a purely focused factory nor a purely custom solutions shop. The team-based approach is comprehensive (education, screening, research, treatment, care management) but focused on a significant chronic disease - diabetes. The ICLDC also demonstrates lean Six Sigma concepts, and allows for discussions of western-managed solutions to health care in the Middle East.
