Abstract
US-based NII Holdings provides integrated mobile communication services in Latin America. Using the iDEN (Integrated Digital Enhanced Network) technology developed by Motorola, it is the first in the region to provide two-way radio with push-to-talk (PTT) functions. It focuses on the mid-to high-usage customer segment, typically postpaid corporate white-and-blue-collar workers, offering specialized services while its main competitors serve multiple prepaid customer segments. Having high ARPU levels, low churn rates, and a strong balance sheet, NII Holdings is able to expand its PTT operations aggressively in Latin America, especially Brazil. It also begins to deploy 3G networks in Peru and Chile to complement its iDEN network. This growth pattern, however, is becoming difficult to sustain in the face of increased competition from both global telecom giants and local Latin American rivals. The company needs to find a way to continue differentiating itself from competitors while increasing its market share in its key markets - Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Chile, and Argentina.
