Abstract

Private health care service in India has always been under the scanner for various reasons. The share of private health care services has been nearly 80% of the total health care services which was comparatively higher than most of the developed countries. Private health care has become one of the most lucrative businesses in India as a result of significant exemptions given by the state in the form of concessional rates and tax breaks. The corporate sectors in India and many NRI''s have started investing in this business. This sort of corporate hospital boom witnessed by urban India resulted in the rise of multispecialty and super specialty hospitals in the leading metro cities. The country has been swamped by tourists for medical treatment as part of medical tourism from all across the globe. Despite all these, the average Indian''s access to tertiary medical care remains poor. With no effective government regulation in place, it remained to be seen how far the corporatisation of health services can help in reaching the goal of providing universal basic heath services to all.
