Abstract

Microsoft''s game division has been in the headlines ever since its release of the XBOX video game system on November 15, 2001. The system was more powerful than the competition''s, and it sported quite a few AAA titles. Facing competitors such as Nintendo and Sony, Microsoft was able to secure a number 2 position in the Console Wars save for one market: Japan. Here the XBOX was trumped even by Nintendo''s GameCube, whose sales were dismal outside of Japan. Fast forward 8 years. Learning from its last home console successes and failures Microsoft has released a second console which has been extremely successful in North America and Europe. Somehow it is still flailing in the Land of the Rising Sun. This time Nintendo has taken the number 1 spot worldwide, with Microsoft and Sony trailing behind. Microsoft has made a bit of headway with hit games like Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, but it doesn''t seem to be enough to keep the XBOX 360 afloat in Japan.
