Abstract
The Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), one of the special types of passenger cars similar to station wagons, ran successfully throughout the world since the 1990s. The top automobile manufacturers in the world looked forward to produce more SUVs so that they could capture the major markets in the world. However, the environmentalists and scientists were concerned with the negative impact of SUVs on the environment. They pointed out that SUVs emitted substantial amount of Carbon dioxide (CO2) in the air, thereby causing serious environmental pollution. The experts further highlighted that major SUV manufacturers in the world were keen to earn substantial revenue and profit by producing more SUVs in the market, grossly ignoring their responsibility towards environmental conservation. The Environment and Forest Minister of India, Jairam Ramesh, also blamed automobile companies for running SUVs on Indian roads. According to him, running SUVs on Indian roads were as unlawful as committing a crime. This particular car required huge amount of diesel and consequently emitted considerable amount of CO2 in the atmosphere. The minister also pointed out that the SUV car manufacturers in India normally produced diesel-run SUV cars for getting the benefit of government-aided diesel subsidy. This subsidy in diesel was provided to the poor farmers especially for agricultural purposes. Hence, the minister urged the need for a suitable diesel policy that could offer benefit to poor farmers instead of the major automobile companies. Some automobile experts and car manufacturers, on the other hand, differed with the minister''s view. They tried to defend the fact that SUVs were not the only or major pollutants in the country. Therefore, it remained to be seen whether SUVs could run on Indian roads without significantly disturbing the ecological balance of the country.
