Would you like to use cases to teach students how to lead in a polarised world? This free webinar offers you the opportunity to learn from experts at the Blavatnik School of Government.

Leading in the age of outrage

Around the world, popular anger and polarisation seem to be growing, driven by deep anxiety about the future, by distrust in elites and information sources, and by widespread perceptions that ‘the system is rigged’. For leaders of organisations, in both the public and private sectors, this anger poses a number of challenges – for instance: how to create norms for constructive dialogue with detractors; how to prioritise among different contentious issues and polarised stakeholders; how to calibrate expectations across those stakeholders; and how to build organisational and personal resilience in the face of constant criticisms.

Learning how to lead in the age of outrage is not a simple task; it requires students to build the reflexes and skills of good judgement. With practice working through difficult managerial dilemmas, exposure to diverse competencies, characters, and commitments, and the opportunity to reflect on choices, individuals can develop the skills of good decision-making. The challenge for schools of leadership lies in providing students with such opportunities. Traditional teaching methods, such as lecturing, can build reasoning abilities but are less well-suited to teach judgement. In contrast, by providing examples drawn from real-world situations full of uncertainty, complexity, and time pressure, as well as providing the learning community of the discussion-based classroom, the case method is ideally suited to this task.

At the Blavatnik School of Government, the Case Centre on Public Leadership has been developing case studies (available via The Case Centre) designed to teach students how to lead in a polarised world. From tackling disinformation at the highest level during the US elections, to balancing national security and development needs in 5G deployment in India, to building trust among minority ethnic communities as London’s police commissioner, these case studies provide students with real-world examples of leaders confronting polarisation, anger, and populism.

About this webinar

This free 60-minute webinar, hosted by The Case Centre's Deputy Director, Vicky Lester, will draw on the expertise of Professor Karthik Ramanna, Professor of Business and Public Policy and Director of the Case Centre on Public Leadership, and Professor Ciaran Martin, Professor of Practice in the Management of Public Organisations and a case method teacher at the Blavatnik School, to:

  • explore the challenges facing leaders in this era of populist anger
  • consider the benefits and challenges of using the case method to teach students key skills of judgement to help them face such challenges
  • provide specific examples of cases used at the Blavatnik School to teach these core leadership skills.

To ensure an interactive classroom experience the number of places on the webinar will be limited. We ask that all participants are ready to join the discussion with their audio and video on.
