Workshop: Successful Case Teaching

Are you interested in teaching with cases? Are you looking for new and exciting ways to reinvigorate your teaching? This two-day in-person workshop will give you fresh inspiration in the classroom, helping you offer students at all levels, from undergraduate to executive, an exciting and motivational learning experience.

Overview

Learn how to engage students and get the most from case discussions in the classroom in this intensive and interactive hands-on workshop. This workshop includes the opportunity to practise case teaching in a safe and supportive environment.

The case method is widely recognised as an enormously powerful approach to teaching and learning, especially in management education. This workshop will provide teachers with the opportunity to explore the case method and assess its benefits for use in their own classes. The highly experienced tutor will share practical tips and skills for teaching with cases and offer guidance on case selection and instructor preparation for class. Participants will gain confidence and share experiences in a friendly and supportive environment.

Monday 30 June 2025

You will receive pre-course reading two weeks before the first session.

9h - 12.30h (CET)

  • Introduction.
  • Why use cases? What makes a good case discussion?
  • Types and characteristics of cases and their applicability in different environments.
  • The fundamentals of teaching a case session, including case selection and preparation.

12.30h - 13.30h (CET)

Lunch

13.30h - 16.30h (CET)

  • Opening a cased-based session.
  • Guiding the discussion.
  • Participant teaching practice.

Tuesday 1 July 2025 

9h - 12.30h (CET)

  • Participant teaching practice.
  • Closing a case-based session.
  • Using cases for evaluation and assessment.
  • Using special types of cases.
  • Online case teaching.

12.30h - 13.30h (CET)

Lunch

13.30h - 16.30h (CET)

  • Designing case-based courses.
  • Case use within your organisation.
  • Programme summary and closure.

Your workshop tutor

Ulf Schaefer
Ulf has been a workshop tutor for The Case Centre since 2015 and has delivered over 20 case training events.

Ulf Schaefer is an associate professor of practice at SDA Bocconi School of Management.

Ulf teaches leadership, change, decision making, and responsible management. His research focuses on (un)ethical behaviour in organizations taking behavioural ethics and social identity perspectives.

He is an award-winning case author, receiving The Case Centre’s Human Resource Management / Organisational Behaviour Award in 2013 and 2014. Ulf also appeared in The Case Centre's Top 50 Bestselling Case Authors 2022/23 and is the author of many bestselling and classic cases.
