Abstract
Customers of the Baja Beach dance club can get an RFID chip implanted in their arm, which allows them to pay for drinks without a wallet and to enter the club without standing in line. It only takes a few minutes to get the chip implanted by a doctor who is present in the club. This controversial RFID application attracted much media attention and reinforced the trendsetter image of the club. This case study allows students to derive (1) the determinants of user acceptance of new technologies (such as usefulness, ease of use, social influence, facilitating conditions, age, gender etc in line with the TAM and the UTAUT2 models). These determinants are also relevant for the acceptance of less exciting business systems. The case also allows deriving (2) the elements that determine whether a new information system can give a company a sustainable competitive advantage (such as leveraging existing resources, locking-in customers, etcetera). All theory is derived from MIS Quarterly papers. The teaching note links the theoretical constructs to the case. Movies are included. The case has been used successfully in 2nd Bachelor and in Master years as well as with students with a few years of company experience. Students evaluated the case study very positively.
