Abstract
Based in Burbank, California, Thinkwell Group is charged with developing a billion-dollar theme park in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. While the project creates creative opportunities for many of Thinkwell’s employees, it also presents potential difficulties for them because of discrepancies between US and UAE laws, particularly in relation to social and personal issues. The project would require that Thinkwell employees relocate to Abu Dhabi; however, same-sex and unmarried couples would not be permitted to live together. In a nation where homosexuality is itself outlawed, LGBT employees at Thinkwell might be subjected to deportation, imprisonment, or worse if they engaged in homosexual activity. As Thinkwell prepares its employees for relocation, company leaders must consider the UAE’s positions not only on homosexuality, but also on women in leadership roles and medical privacy. In doing so, the company must decide whether to compromise its own progressive values in order to abide by the UAE’s laws or whether to push the UAE to accommodate its staffing policies.
