Abstract

This is the second of a two-case series (IMD-3-1133 and IMD-3-1233). The case looks at how Gautam Thapar restructured Ballarpur Industries, the flagship of his family''s group of companies. The (B) case closely examines Gautam''s restructuring programme and efforts over a period of three years and his decision to acquire a competitor. Despite his hard work, the company''s share price did not regain its pre-restructuring levels. The (B) case closes with the question: is this acquisition the right move from a timing, financial and strategic perspective? A video ''IMD-3-1133-V'' is available to accompany this case series.
