Abstract
From sandy beaches to lush green parks, from heritage sites that emanate a sense of tranquility, to crowded, bustling city and night life, Dubai has had something to offer everyone, in terms of tourism. With growth in population and in effect, the economy, Dubai’s success at providing world class infrastructure, accommodation and medical care, facilitated its attempt to establish itself as a medical hub. Dubai recognised the potential of the impact of the amalgamation of two of the largest industries in the world, namely, tourism and healthcare. Its opportune location and its strategic planning had led to its success in promulgating Medical Tourism due to various factors, such as exceptional government support, tremendous growth initiatives in terms of tourism and the insurmountable determination to bring Dubai to the pinnacle of success. There were also various opportunities that Dubai could have considered in order to succeed at its mission. However, various hurdles in the form of perception-driven draw backs and dearth of qualified health care staff played a part in impeding growth of this tourism related sector. With this background, it remained to be seen whether Dubai would succeed in exploiting its strengths, to emerge as a medical tourism hub.
