Abstract
India Inc's most prolific CEO Guru, KV Kamath (Kamath) was a visionary Banker with an impeccable execution skill. His smooth and speedy implementation of projects within a strict time frame had brought efficiency to the banking system. In his career spanning four decades, he had transformed ICICI Bank into becoming India’s second-largest lender bank. Apart from catapulting ICICI Bank to reach great heights, he had created a whole new generation of leaders for India’s financial sector. His scorecard was impressive as he gained pan-Asian banking experience with his stint at Asian Development Bank and put that into practice both in ICICI Bank and in Infosys during difficult times. The legendary banker was appointed as the first head of the Shanghai-based New Development Bank (NDB) of the BRICS group in May 2015. NDB was billed as a counterweight to challenge the Bretton Woods Institutions of World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Moreover, an eternal optimist like Kamath was expected to usher in an era of new economic order and helped in serving the interests of all the stakeholders involved. Kamath had a tough task ahead as he had to manage the domineering China and other stake holders of NDB with China’s focus and interest deeply entrenched in its other initiative, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank. With this backdrop, analysts wondered whether Kamath would be able to guide and direct NDB towards its chosen objectives. Would Kamath succeed as the Head of NDB and reaffirm his ability to build global institutions of repute?
