Abstract
Wikipedia was one of the most popular and most visited sites worldwide. Its monthly users stood at 490 million and it had a repository of over 22 million articles. Launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales (Wales) and Larry Sanger, the free encyclopedia provided its users with free access to information. Users could add or edit articles on its sites; its radical openness had led to its phenomenal success. A study by Nature, a weekly international Journal in 2005 revealed that the information in Wikipedia was nearly as accurate as that of the Encyclopedia Britannica. But on the flip side, there were many criticisms about Wikipedia. Of late, it was widely debated by academicians regarding the usage of Wikipedia for research purposes. While any user could access Wikipedia to gain subject knowledge, its radical openness was under scrutiny with respect to vandalism, bias, plagiarism and violated copyrights.
