Abstract
IBM championed remote working to establish a flexible workforce and get better customer satisfaction while ensuring enhanced engagement. The advent of internet provided multiple opportunities to network with remote workers. Consequently, the revolution of remote work rapidly spread across various industries including insurance, finance, real estate, transportation and computer and information systems. The arrival of millennials into the workforce coupled with expansion of cloud as well as mobile technologies facilitated remote working to reshape the workplace worldwide. Flexible remote working had transformed working patterns in the 21st century benefitting both employers and employees. Subsequently, in 2013 Yahoo and in 2017 IBM reverted back to restrictive remote working. The aim was to value co-working which enabled decisions, idea formulation and maximum utilisation of opportunities as well as enhanced innovation in a collaborative work environment. In response to the rapidly changing competition, IBM was focusing on agile management to boost innovation over increasing productivity. Meanwhile, according to the company sources the practice of remote working at IBM was not being discarded but given a more realistic orientation. In such a scenario, was IBM correct in remodelling its work policy?
