Abstract

Aamir Khan, the off-beat film icon and one of the most profitable actors in Bollywood was known as the 'marketing guru' of the Indian film industry. The actor always came out with a unique way to market his films. According to experts, Aamir Khan tried to closely engross with the creativity of each and every film where he was involved, whether as an actor or a producer. The biggest marketing technique the actor followed was to live in the role in reality much before the movie was released. Moreover, 'contemporary issues and high on impact' were the two key criteria that acted as a fuel for the overall success of his movies. Due to the unique innovations in marketing techniques of the movies, most of the films of the actor had already generated millions in box office collections. 'Dangal', released in 2016, collected around INR19.3 billion till date. Along with the domestic market, Aamir Khan's movies were also very well accepted in China, the second largest movie market in the world. By seeing his popularity, the Government of India (GoI) was planning to appoint the actor as the brand ambassador of India to China with an intention to boost trade with the country. However, success had never been an easy ride for Aamir Khan. His movies were entangled with controversies such as hurting the sentiments of Hindus in 'PK', improper depiction of farmers' plight in 'Peepli Live' and copyright issues for '3 Idiots', etc. Another movie 'Fanaa' was also banned in Gujarat due to Aamir Khan's controversial comments on GoI while supporting the 'Narmada Bachao Andolan' under the leadership of Medha Patkar.
