Abstract
LIU Jian, President of CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Corporation), felt that sustainability issues presented significant new risks as well as potential opportunities. The challenge was how to adapt organizational strategies, business models and practices to respond to social and environmental challenges while creating financial success and value for shareholders. The case provides students with a realistic context in which to examine the concepts of corporate social responsibility and sustainability. Students are asked to identify and discuss the benefits and disadvantages of sustainability reporting at CNOOC and its ongoing sustainability efforts. Finally, students are asked to make suggestions to management regarding future sustainability reporting.
