Abstract

Indian Institute of Technology alumni, Abhishek Bansal and Vaibhav Khandelwal co-founded Shadowfax Technologies Pvt Ltd (Shadowfax) in 2015. By adopting Uber-like model, Shadowfax became the last-mile delivery venture and the first-ever logistics gateway for businesses. Further, the business model of Shadowfax made instant deliveries a reality for big and small sellers across categories like food, grocery, fashion, pharmacy, furniture, e-Commerce and other traditional business sectors. With the state-of-the-art Routing algorithms clubbed with Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, Shadowfax had built efficiencies in its operations. As of 2020, the company witnessed 3X growth and had been rendering its services across 500 cities in India, with the help of its 100,000 registered delivery partners and was shipping 10 million deliveries monthly. Its clients included biggies like Amazon, Swiggy, BigBasket, Nykaa, Domino's, Paytm, Flipkart etc. Shadowfax claimed that it was the largest crowdsourced delivery platform in India and a leader in the reverse logistics segment. Further, the founders aimed to grow 10X by 2024 and take the company public. However, the company had to face challenges like stiff competition from its rivals, manage its riders' aspirations while ensuring productivity, train them in soft skills and overcome the economic slowdown due to Covid-19 pandemic. In such a scenario, would Shadowfax be able to create long-term capabilities by developing an efficient and superior service quality ecosystem in the Indian logistics sector?
