Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic had severely impacted women at work worldwide and had intensified the pre-existing inequalities at workplaces and homes. The unemployment rate had risen exponentially due to the lockdowns and fast diminishing job opportunities. Concurrently, the necessity of social distancing for restraining the pandemic had resulted in disruptive social and economic consequences particularly for women at work. Women had to specifically bear the complexities of children's schooling from home, caring for the elderly, reduced or absent household support and non-supportive or overly demanding spouses. Moreover, the pandemic had transformed the labour market with devastating effects for women workers and their families creating a Hobson's choice between professional careers and family caretaking. The evolving shift to new work models was inconvenient for many women as they had to shoulder multiple responsibilities. Such circumstances were especially acute for women from lower economic backgrounds and minority communities. The conventional recession had turned into a 'she-cession' due to an extreme impact on working women. Moreover, the pandemic had added an enormous stress burden on women who were trying to achieve work-life balance. As such the employers had a major supporting role to play in the 'she-covery'. It was critical for them to facilitate women labour force participation for reversing the slide in their employment. Would the businesses succeed in attracting working women back to workforce by crafting an equitable work environment?
