Abstract
In 2015, Hotstar was launched in India after it acquired the streaming rights for IPL and HBO content. However, setbacks arose in 2023 when the platform lost IPL streaming rights and HBO licence leading to concerns about a potential loss of 15 million subscribers and subsequently a growth slowdown. To weather the storm, Disney+ Hotstar intended to capitalise on its successful India originals to attract viewers and invest in regional content. In the absence of IPL and HBO, how could Hotstar differentiate itself and sustain growth in the fiercely competitive Indian market? Could Disney+ Hotstar effectively leverage its existing content portfolio and explore new opportunities to drive subscriber growth and market penetration in India?
