Abstract

In India, buying a home and getting the interiors done in one's own style used to be a harrowing experience. From obtaining finance, choosing real estate, and hiring painters, plumbers and other skilled labour - each element in the process was difficult for a customer to go through. So, most people would leave everything related to construction and interiors to the building contractor, including choosing paints. However, the situation changed in the early 2000s. The process of obtaining a home loan is no longer as difficult as it used to be. Financial institutions have cut down on processing time and lowered interest rates. Companies that sell products such as paints, sanitaryware, taps and other home accessories are assisting customers in creating homes according to their individual tastes. The case takes a look at the home building boom in India and what role financial institutions and builders have played in it. The case also examines how a few significant players in the home building and decor segment have been working towards providing complete solutions to customers, instead of just selling them products.
