Abstract
Geneva Airport plays a significant role in the economy of the City of Geneva, Canton of Geneva, and surrounding regions that border it - including the French-speaking part of Switzerland, France, and even Italy. First established in 1920, the airport grew in numbers to 17.8 million in 2019. The airport was self-financing and depended on passenger traffic for its revenues. As with most airports, during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant drop in passenger numbers down to 5.6 million in 2021 and a consequential reduction in revenues. At the time of the case, 2022, the airport was in significant debt. At the same time, passenger numbers were projected to reach between 21.8-28.4 million, and the existing infrastructure of the airport would not only be unable to handle such numbers, but some parts of the airport were in dire need of renovation. The airport fell short of IATA's recommendation for the different functions of an airport. The case explores the steps taken by CEO André Schneider to build a case for change to influence the Board and the airport's owner, the Canton of Geneva, to invest in new infrastructure to secure the airport's future and ensure its fit for the future. It considers the different challenges Schneider faces, given the airport's geography and limited footprint. The case illustrates how new thinking is required when making a case for change.
