Abstract
This is the second of a two-case series (303-037-1 and 303-038-1). Whereas the key issue of case (A) was to assess the 'killer' substitute and its effects on the structure of the industry, the answer is clear in case (B): digital is skyrocketing and becoming the new 'standard', progressively putting aside silver halide. Some key issues still remain concerning digital substitutive speed. What will help crossing the chasm: performance/price ratio improvement, standard requirement (a key driver to a steady and high growth) and network effects of the new business? After having analysed those issues and tried to understand what are the main winning business models and possible strategies in this new industry, each group of students will have to conduct a thorough analysis of one of the 6 main competitors and propose recommendations on its strategy in the photography arena. This case study can profitably be used as an exam case with a long debriefing session where successively, for each of the 6 companies, 1 or 2 groups presents its analysis and recommendations.
