Abstract

Founded in 1979, EMC Corporation (EMC) became the world''s leading provider of high-end enterprise data storage systems in the early 1990s. EMC provided storage solutions to the world''s largest banks, airlines, Internet providers and government agencies. From 1997 to 2000, EMC sales doubled every year and it was believed that there was no looking back. However, due to the economic recession and increased competition from the established storage vendors like IBM and Hewlett-Packard, EMC revenues have begun to slide since 2001. This case discusses the events that led to the sudden decline of EMC''s revenues and some of the initiatives taken by its new CEO Joseph Tucci to reverse EMC''s fortunes.
