Abstract

The case provides detailed information on various functional areas of Zurich Financial Services (Zurich), including human resource policies and finance. The case discusses the company''s history since its inception and market segments including consumer, corporate, commercial, small business and wholesale. The case also gives details of Zurich''s globalisation efforts and the various geographic regions in which the company operates including the revenues derived from these regions and various countries. The case also includes information regarding the company''s social responsibility initiatives. It also covers the future prospects of Zurich and the problems being faced by the company due to the mismanagement by the former CEO Rolf Huppi. The case is structured to enable students to: (1) gain an overall understanding of the operations of a global insurance company; (2) understand the various product segments in the insurance industry; (3) understand globalisation initiatives taken by Zurich Financial Services; (4) understand the future strategies to be adopted by Zurich in order to compete successfully in the global insurance industry; and (5) gain a general understanding of the trends in the global insurance industry. The case is aimed at MBA/PGDBA students, and is intended to be a part of the strategy and general management curriculum. The teaching note does not contain an analysis of the case.
