Abstract
This case considers the situation of the leading German ship-building company Bremer Vulkan which sought legal protection from its creditors in February 1996. With a history of trading problems and allegations of criminal behaviour surrounding its purchase of privatised east German ship-yards, the company has found itself reduced to a parlous state. The case is intended to explore a range of issues of central concern to senior management related to corporate governance and the impact upon the business of institutional environmental factors. Stakeholder analysis is a key ingredient of the case and the scope for empathising with the various parties and interests in the case is an important component. The case will also provide the opportunity for consideration of the strategic business options facing the company and the various interests.
