Abstract
This case illustrates the considerations required in the preparation of a feasibility study for an industrial project to produce a range of soap products and detergents. Several indices of investment efficiency (eg Payback Period, Discounted Payback Period, Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return) can be computed and the impact of taxation demonstrated. Considerations of Risk and Uncertainty can be included in the analysis by carrying out Sensitivity Tests and Risk Analysis using Monte Carlo simulation to assess the impact of variations in key project parameters (selling price, production levels, discount rate, project life, operating costs) on the project''s viability. The use of a microcomputer-based spreadsheet (eg Lotus 123, Multiplan, Supercalc) for sensitivity analysis and an investment appraisal computer package (eg Interactive Financial Planning System - IFPS) for risk analysis can be usefully incorporated into the case assignment.
