Abstract
A small family firm with roots in the 19th century, typical of many UK engineering companies, is becoming less dominated by the owners. The case presents opportunities for discussing alternative strategies for the Company which will satisfy the needs of the stakeholders involved - shareholders, managers, employees, customers and the ICFC. The issues of what business the Company is in, and what it should be in, revolve around whether to specialise in what the firm is good at doing, with subsequent product and marketing decisions, or whether to sell jobbing capacity and take on any order that comes along. The merchanting of Swedish steel strip used by the firm slowly developed the merchanting business to the level of its manufactured business. Should this be encouraged? Would a modern costing system help to solve their financial problems?
