Abstract

The case reflects on how a Saudi royal, HRH Princess Al-Bandari bint Abdul Rahman bin Faisal bin Abdul Aziz Al-Saud (Princess Al-Bandari), played an instrumental role in revamping Saudi Arabia's philanthropic landscape. Born into a lineage of powerful women, Princess Al-Bandari was surrounded by women who built the foundations for the revolutionary transformation of Saudi Arabia. In this regard, she was exposed early on to informal and formal philanthropic initiatives while accompanying her mother and grandmother to non-profit and charitable organizations. With a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Riyadh's King Saud University in 1994 and a Master's in Public Policy from the JFK School of Government at Harvard University in 1998, post-graduation Princess Al-Bandari set her sights on improving the social tangent of the Kingdom. Taking on the role of Director General and CEO of King Khalid Foundation (KKF) in 2001, at a time when women could not drive, vote, or even get elected, Princess Al-Bandari designed innovative solutions to counter the social and economic challenges Saudi faced, and made several efforts to eliminate poverty and campaign against domestic abuse. Going a step further, Princess Al-Bandari also drafted plans to boost the current contributory role of the sector from just below one percent in 2017 to over five percent of the Kingdom's GDP by 2030. With an outstanding contribution to Saudi community Princess Al-Bandari was considered as a pioneer of philanthropy and social work. With this milieu, it remained to be seen how the posthumous legacy of the Princess of Charity could continue to transform the philanthropical landscape of the Kingdom.
